Hundreds of women today turned up at hospitals in Bihar and West Bengal with complaints of vomiting and eruption of skin rash after they applied mehendi on the eve of Eid.

Nine women, including two housewives, of Kalyanpur in Burdwan district of West Bengal were admitted to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital with similar complaints.

"We bought readymade pouches of mehendi from local markets and suffered from skin rashes and vomiting after applying them on the arms," Rubita Chowdhury, a college student, told PTI in BMCH.

"They were being administered saline and anti-allergic drugs. It's a mass psychogenic illness. The rumour of a death from similar symptoms fuelled the panic," Dr Om Prakash Singh, attending doctor of BMCH said.

Reports of similar incidents reached from Asansol, Raniganj, Jamuria of Burdwan district and they were treated at local hospitals.

Meanwhile, similar incidents in Bihar has prompted health department to constitute a committee to collect samples and send them to laboratories in Kolkata.

State health department's principal secretary CK Mishra said hundreds of worried women with skin rashes visited different hospitals in Bihar.

"The hospitals have been alerted and people were advised to be careful," Mishra said. According to a report from Gopalganj district, several girls and women with complaints of mehendi reaction were admitted to Sadar hospital here.

They had applied mehendi on the occasion of Eid, official sources said, adding their condition was stated to be out of danger. Excessive use of chemicals in the mehendi pouches caused the allergic reaction as most of them vomited and complained of uneasiness, they said.
