Rajlakshmi Dutta always aspired to be a scholar since her childhood. However, hailing from a conservative family and being married at the tender age of 12 to Jagabandhu Dutta, who also hailed from an equally conservative family, did not give her the opportunity to get literate.

The 95-year-old could have continued to live her life in the same conservative shell she has been living in all these years, but she had a dogged determination to get dreams fulfiled in a different way.

Rajlakshmi sold all her jewellery worth Rs3 lakh at a local jewellery store and donated the amount to Bonkapasi Sharada Memorial School at Bonkapasi village in West Bengal’s Burdwan district on a condition that the amount would be used to help underprivileged girls get education.

“My husband has left some money for me, which will fetch me my two meals a day. These ornaments do not have any special value for me except that they are now being ultilised for a good cause,” she said.

Secretary of the governing council SK Dey, who received the donation on behalf of the school, said that the amount would be used to set up a separate wing where underprivileged girls would be taught. “We will start the work with the amount donated by Mrs Dutta. While the school authorities will release some more funds, we will also seek donations from other people. My challenge now is to fulfil her [Rajlakshmi Dutta’s] dream during her lifetime,” Dey said.

“Seeing underprivileged girls getting educated will give me a sense of contentment. I will feel like my childhood dream of becoming a scholar is fulfiled,” Rajlakshmi said.
