A swift government inquiry has taken the wind out of a TV news channel’s much-hyped report about women being mortgaged due to poverty and starvation in UP’s drought-hit Bundelkhand region. The news channel had been flashing a story about Kusuma alias Sallo being sold. Her husband Kali Charan, a resident of Basar village in Jhansi district, alleged that his brother-in-law had sold Kusuma to another man.

Smelling a good political opportunity, UP Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi was quick to lambast the government. She even despatched a three-member fact-finding team to the village. Even National Commission for Women chairperson Girija Vyas has announced an inquiry into the matter.

However, it was an inquiry by a team of officers sent to the spot by Jhansi district magistrate Raj Shekhar that laid the case bare. Kusuma herself said on record that she chose to live with the other man and was not sold to him.

In an official statement recorded by the officials before village elders, she said she had been living with Deshraj, a resident of Bagrauni village, for the last six years, and even had a daughter Varsha, 3, with him. Kusuma said she had left her husband Kali Charan as he did not take good care of her. She admitted she was happy with Deshraj and will continue to live with him.

Kusuma was married to Kali Charan 20 years ago. She had a son Dharmendra, 10, and daughter Vineeta, 13, with him. The son is now living with her in Deshraj’s home.

Statements of other villagers and relatives of Kali Charan also proved the news channel story was misleading, the district magistrate has said in his report. The report has been sent to the chief minister’s secretariat.
