Woman daily wager at VS attempts suicide

She drank a bottle of sanitiser after a sanitary inspector allegedly passed casteist remarks against her.

A woman working as daily-wages labourer at VS Hospital attempted suicide on Saturday after she was allegedly sexually harassed and thrown out of the hospital by a sanitary inspector. The woman has alleged that the sanitary inspector had passed several castiest remarks on her before throwing her out of the hospital.

The Ellisbridge police lodged an FIR under the Atrocity Act against the sanitary inspector who has been identified as Umesh Patel. According to the FIR, the woman who works at the hospital as a sweeper was pushed out of the hospital by Patel after a heated argument at around 11am.

The woman has alleged that the sanitary inspector dragged her out of the hospital making castiest and lewd remarks even after her husband had arrived on the scene. Police said the woman got so depressed by the remarks that she swallowed a bottle of sanitiser.

Police said that the hospital authorities didn't inform them about the incident till around 1 pm when a police complaint was lodged. The woman is not a permanent employee of the hospital but works there as a daily-wages labourer.

Despite several attempts, resident medical officer DS Chandana couldn't be contacted for his comments. The police said the woman was admitted to the hospital after her condition started deteriorating. Her health is now stable, the police added.
