As in the last 10 years, the Comptroller and Auditor General’s (CAG) report will be tabled this year too on the last day of the assembly’s budget session so that it is adopted without much fuss.

But this year the state government has taken an addtional precaution. On Wednesday, all Congress MLAs were suspended for the rest of the budget session for allegedly stalling proceedings of the House. There will therefore be no Opposition in the House on the last day to ask the state government uncomfortable questions on the CAG report.

On Monday, the Opposition Congress had made a representation to the Governor against the state government’s practice of tabling the CAG report on the last day of the session. Congress MLAs had alleged that the government had delayed tabling of CAG reports because they exposed its corruption.

The Governor had also expressed concern at the state government’s failure to table till now the CAG report for 2010-11. In a letter to the assembly secretary dated March 26, 2012, the Governor said CAG had submitted its report in February itself and the state government should have placed it before the assembly by now. The letter also said that Raj Bhavan had not received any formal proposal from the government so far regarding tabling of CAG report for 2010-11.

"Since the current session of the assembly is going to end on March 30, the Opposition would be denied the opportunity of having a meaningful discussion on the report. This appears to be a matter of grave concern," the Governor said in her letter sent on Monday.

Assembly secretary DM Patel confirmed that he had received the letter. "I received the letter from the Governor regarding tabling of the CAG report and had told the Speaker about it. The Speaker has also written to the state finance minister. The minister has ensured that copies of the report will reach the assembly and that it will be tabled in the house on March 30," Patel said.
