The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has targeted Union Home Minister P Chidambaram after the terror attack on an Israeli
embassy car within 500 metres of the prime minister’s residence.
“There have been nine terror attacks since he took over as union home minister and all of them remain unsolved,” said party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar.
In an expression of sympathy with the Jewish state, party’s Rajya Sabha member Tarun Vijay led a team to the Israel embassy.
“It is a serious matter that the terror attack has taken place on Indian soil, in the national capital and near the prime minister’s house,” he said. In response to a DNA query whether the party believed that it was not Iran but some other group that was behind the attack, Javadekar said he did not mean it that way and all that he wanted was for the government to make a thorough inquiry.
He said in the German Bakery blast in Pune which took place two years ago, and in the November 26, 2008 terror attack in Mumbai, the terrorists targeted the Israeli Chabad houses. He was, however, not willing to infer that the group behind the attack was not strictly Iranian as suspected by the Israelis. The Congress dismissed the BJP’s criticism of the home minister as “premature and uncalled for.
Party spokesperson Manish Tewari said the BJP is is in the habit of issuing a running commentary even before the preliminary investigations have been conducted.
“What is the point in directing accusing fingers at anyone when there is no evidence in place? Why can’t the principal opposition party wait before passing a judgement that the union home minister has failed,” Tewari said.
However, the incident has caused concern in the ruling party as it exposes the vulnerability of the national capital to such terror attacks. The international ramifications of the incident are also a worrisome aspect. “Obviously, someone has planned this attack with an eye on the international situation. Forces that want to harm India in view of the delicate cross linkages between Iran and United States of America, and of course our long time not so friendly neighbour Pakistan are surely upto some tricks,” said a senior party functionary.
