Ahmedabad police has drawn up plans to either build a new office for the city police commissioner near RTO circle or to demolish the present one in Shahibaug and construct a new one in its place.

Commissioner Sudhir Sinha told DNA that they have approached the state government in this regard. "We have sent a proposal to the district collector of Ahmedabad to allot city police land near RTO circle to set up the new office. If this does not work out, we have sent an alternative plan to demolish the present office and build a new one in its place," Sinha said.

Sources said that the commissioner has asked for the land between Chimanbhai Bridge and Ranip Bridge near RTO circle.

The CP wants a new office as the present one is more than 50 years old and lacks modern facilities.

However, if the government does not give them land near RTO circle, they have the alternate plan. "If we have to execute the alternate plan, we will partially demolish the present office building and start construction of new one. Both the work, demolition and construction, will progress in tandem and it will take two years to complete," Sinha added.

The commissioner has assigned special duty to Harekrushna Patel, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), zone-II, for the project. Ranip police inspector Sudarshansinh Vaghela, Sabarmati police inspector and other police officials are helping the DCP. Sources said that DCP Patel was given the responsibility as he has experience in executing such plans. Before he was transferred to city police early this year, he was district superintendent of police (DSP), Banaskantha. During his tenure there he had 10 police stations and five police chowkis built within 18 months.

This will be fourth attempt by city's top cop to relocate his office. The first effort to change the office to Ramlila Maidan near Subhash Bridge was aborted following dispute between two IPS officers of the force. In the second attempt, the project did not take off as a high-tension cable crossed the plot of land that was identified for construction of the office near Sabarmati jail. After that, proposals were made to move the CP's office to Gaekwad Haveli area but they never materialised.
