Asin Pathan, Ahmedabad's own alleged Jack the Ripper, who was accidentally nabbed by the city police on Friday, was at least on one occasion nabbed by the police for murder.

But then alleged shoddy investigation by the police ensured that he could walk away free - and the price was paid by six innocent people.

This has given rise to the question - will he again walk free? Advocates whom DNA talked to opined that if he is truly guilty, Pathan needs to be punished but also expressed concern that poor investigation may again come to his rescue.

It should be noted that Pathan was acquitted in July 2009 for the murder of one Ashok Bihari alias Batka.  Sources said that he was acquitted only because police had failed to prove his guilt and provide evidence regarding the same.

"A fault in the investigation could help him get away," senior advocate, Mukul Sinha told DNA. He said that usually there are some lacuna i the police investigations.

"It is difficult to trust police investigations and if they fumble again he can be out on bail soon," he said. However, Sinha clarified that if police manage to do their work the chance of Pathan being acquitted or securing bail is slim.

Another advocate Umesh Tamaichi told DNA that lack of evidence against an accused always helps the latter. "In such cases, the police need to have ample evidence including those from the Forensic Science Laboratory to prove the crime. If this is not done, he could be a free man," said Tamaichi.

However, police on the other hand are determined not to repeat the alleged faulty investigation as happened in the Batka murder case, for which Pathan was earlier booked.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCB, Himanshu Shukla said Pathan has led Ellisbridge police to several of the places where he committed the crime.

"Police have also recovered blood-stained stones and bricks, a muffler and a bag from the crime scene. These things belonged to the victim or were used in killing them," he said.

He also said that these things will also be sent to the forensic laboratory to ensure that they have an air tight case against Pathan.

Pathan had allegedly confessed to killing six people in a span of two years.

He was first caught in connection with a loot case but soon allegedly told police about the murders. One of his victims was his beloved, whom he killed as she had left him for someone else.
