Will Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) corporators' headed by standing committee chairperson Asit Vora be able to sing "Brazil, lets go Brazil… la la la on the beautiful beaches of the largest country in South America -- Brazil?"
Or will chief minister Narendra Modi play spoilsport for corporators' last official leisure trip (before the municipal election in October) on public money to attend a seminar on Urban Mobility in National Capital organised by Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO)?
These are the questions that have created a buzz in the civic body. HUDCO has organised the seminar in Brazil from March 22 to 25 where participants from 10 countries are expected to participate.
AMC bosses say they have sent in a proposal for the state government. The buzz has it that AMC officials plan to enjoy a 10-day trip to Brazil- from March 20 to 30 - to attend a three-day event there. But so much is the enthusiasm in the AMC to enjoy the last foreign trip before equations and power games change in the upcoming municipal election that the date for the general board meeting has been pre-poned.
Earlier, the general board was scheduled on March 23 is now decided on March 18 so that corporators can enjoy the trip to Brazil without bothering about Ahmedabad.
While AMC bosses have chalked out plans for 10 days vacation at Brazil, it seems the bosses in the state government are not amused with the free trip idea. "We have been instructed by high command not to participate in the event this year. It seems nobody from AMC would be participating in Brazil seminar," said a senior BJP corporator.
Senior corporator says, chief in Gandhinagar is not amused with the idea as the move might not be perceived well by citizens in the election year.
To be on safer side, the ruling party has also offered to take leader
of opposition in AMC Surendra Baxi along with the BJP corporators but it seems Baxi is not very keen to join the Brazil bandwagon!
The AMC corporators have been enjoying such free vacations abroad in the name of attending seminars as the HUDCO has made a clause to spend certain amount of the loan (taken for Sabarmati Riverfront development project) on capacity building in AMC.
