With seasonal rains being inadequate, many ponds in the area have started depleting and elephants have started coming to the Varattupallam Reservoir in Anthiyur forest for drinking water.

More than ten elephants with their calves came to the Reservoir for drinking water, recently.

Similarly hundreds of deer also visited the reservoir.

Forest department officials wanted people not to visit the reservoir and its surrounding areas during  5 pm to 7 pm as the wild animals would visit the area at that time, consume water and leave the place.

The officials said they had dug up number of ponds and tanks inside the forest to cater to the drinking water needs of the wild animals.

Now due to failure of seasonal rains, the water level in some ponds had started decreasing and so the elephants are visiting the reservoir to drink water, they said.

Elephants are also proceeding to the Bhavanisagar dam to drink water.
