BJP national secretary Kirit Somaiya today said that an inquiry should be done in the wheat worth Rs8,000 crore rotting in godowns of Food Corporation of India in Punjab, terming the incident a "scam".

"60 lakh ton of wheat worth around Rs8,000 crore rotted in FCI in Punjab. Government should inquire into this scam and tell the public that who was responsible for it," Somaiya told reporters here.

He termed the soaring prices of sugar a scam too and demanded inquiry in the reasons that triggered hike.

He alleged that artificial shortage of sugar in the country was caused due to misleading statements of Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar as a result the prices of commodity skyrocketed.

Somaiya said that cashing in on the opportunity 10 major sugar companies of the country earned an additional profit of Rs5,000 crore in last four months, which is again a matter of inquiry.

He estimated that inflation may soar upto 12% in next week due to hike in petrol and diesel prices.
