West coast increases security for World Cup tie

The coastal regions of Karnataka, Kerala and Goa have been put on high alert following a terror threat to an ICC Cricket World Cup match to be held in the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai this week.

The alert has been sounded in the area between Kasargod in Kerala and Canacona in Goa.

The security forces were working on a four-tier system, and have intensified patrolling over the last few days.

The Navy and the coast guard were patrolling the Indian exclusive economic zone, while the coastal security police have intensified patrolling in the coastal waters and beaches.

The state police have also been alerted to carry out frequent patrolling of the coastal roads as well as highways.

Inspector-general of police Alok Mohan said, “The coast has been on the general alert ever since the terror attacks on Mumbai. But this time, the alert has been scaled up due to the match in Mumbai”

Commandant of the coast guard Anil Sharma in Karwar confirmed that his force has been on high alert following an alert issued by the central intelligence department. Patrolling has been extended up to Lakshadweep, he said.

The coastal police deputy superintendent of police  Sadananda Nayak said fishing boats would be checked regularly.
Fishermen have been cautioned against allowing anyone else to travel in their vessels, except registered crew.
