Twenty-eight persons were killed when a bus carrying a marriage party plunged into a gorge at Hajo, around 45km west of Guwahati, Monday midnight.

Groom Naba Kumar Sarma, 32, and around 15 of his family members and relatives were among the victims. The ill-fated vehicle was en route to Tihu in lower Assam from Guwahati.

“Twenty-eight persons are confirmed dead and their bodies have been recovered. The lives of ten others have been saved. The confusion is about a woman. The search will continue as long as we don’t get any confirmation about her,” Assam’s health and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told journalists at the mishap site.

Six persons were rescued by the locals while four others managed to come out of the bus by breaking window panes.
Of the 28 bodies, 24 were retrieved by the locals and the rest by the National Disaster Response Force.

“There is a speed breaker very close to the bridge. We believe the driver hadn’t observed that. Rash driving probably caused the mishap,” the locals said. The bus had rolled down around 20 feet below the bridge into the water body, they added. The state government has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

In another incident, four persons were burnt alive and 12 others injured when a naphtha-laden tanker overturned and collided with an electric pole, resulting in a massive explosion.

Some locals believed the vehicle was carrying petrol and tried to steal the fuel when suddenly there was a big explosion followed by a massive fire. The incident occurred near Bokakhat, around 250km east of Guwahati on Tuesday morning.

The injured sustained third degree burn injuries, official sources said. Two houses were also gutted.
