"The cowards (Maoists) are attacking our party workers in the darkness of night and killing them. But we will not surrender to them," he told a Left Front rally here.

In a dig at Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee, he said, "Sometimes they are saying there is nothing called Maoists. If so, then who are killing our party workers? They are also saying police cannot be sent to tackle the Maoists."

Turning to the Maoist onslaught in West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia, Bhattacharjee said that Trinamool wanted to see that "our party workers surrendered. But they will not bow down".

Left Front chairman Biman Bose, speaking at the rally, also charged Trinamool with having links with the Maoists.

Bose, also a CPI(M) politburo member, said, "what the Trinamool and the Maoists are doing jointly is not in the interest of the state. It is an indication to push the state backward."
