Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi took all credit for speeding up the trial and release of Indian diamond traders (most of whom were from Gujarat) who were held in a Chinese jail for the last two years. He said the quick verdict in the case of the Indian diamond traders was the result of continuous efforts made by the state government.

The chief minister was speaking on Sunday at the 12th Sadbhavna fast organised at Vanita Vishram ground at Athwagate in Surat.

Thirteen Indian diamond traders were freed while nine others were sentenced to different terms in jail in the Chinese city of Shenzhen. Modi said that everyone knows that the traders' release became possible only after he visited China recently with his delegation. A dialogue with the Chinese authorities had cleared the way for an early trial and judgment, he said.

The chief minister lashed out at Congress leaders for making claims that the traders had been released due to the efforts of Congress leaders. "To succeed in such matters, one has to be confident. Congress leaders are unable to solve the problems of their own constituencies. But we looked into their (Chinese authorities) eyes and asked them to take immediate steps to speed up their trial," Modi said. He further said that beside 22 Indian diamond traders, there were three Chinese traders too who had been arrested in the same case.

"The three traders were given 10 years imprisonment by the Shenzhen court while Indian traders were given normal punishment. Did this happen because of the Union government's efforts?" he added.
