With the scam-mired Delhi CWG headquarters not functional anymore, the NIA is expected to soon get spacious 27,000 sq ft area on the 6th and 7th floors of the NDMC building, situated opposite capital’s well-known protest point, the Jantar Mantar.
Until now, the NIA has been working from a makeshift office located in a shopping-cum-office Mall made of glass in a South Delhi district centre which is frequented mostly by youngsters working in BPOs and shoppers.
Despite 24X7 deployment of a Quick Reaction Team outside the Mall, the location of the NIA office is such that it can be targetted easily by terrorists. Being a prime target of terrorists, the NIA officers also worry for the unsuspecting civilians working and visiting the Mall.
The post Delhi HC blast scenario has increased the threat perception on NIA headquarters, sources said. Besides scaring shoppers and office-goers who would often bump suddenly into policemen wearing bullet proof jackets and wielding AK-56 and SLRs, the place was a great source of annoyance to the officers of the elite NIA.
“It has reduced our efficiency by at least by 50% as the work we are doing requires quieter environs. Often a person would appear all of a sudden on the floor where DG and other top officers sit, making security guards apprehensive of his or her motives. Moreover, the distance and traffic jams make it impossible to reach anywhere,” conceded a senior NIA officer.
