While the city must wait long for the first Metro rail corridor to be commissioned, the first phase of the monorail, to be run from Wadala to Chembur, is likely to become operational by November.

According to senior Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) official, it’s likely that the first 8.26-kilometre-long section of the 19.54-kilometre monorail route, Jacob Circle-Wadala-Chembur, would be commissioned “by November or December”.

The test run of the monorail on the 2.5-kilometre stretch, from Wadala to Bhakti Park, was carried out recently. The first phase will have seven stations, namely Chembur, VN Purav Marg, Fertiliser Colony, Bharat Petroleum, Mysore Colony, Bhakti Park and Wadala Depot.

Once completed, the Rs3,000 crore monorail corridor will be the world’s second longest route after the 23.8-kilometre-long Osaka monorail corridor in Japan. Though work on a 4.5-kilometre stretch up to Mysore Colony was complete, it will take some more time to finalise works like station development, communication system, launching girders and electrification of the route apart from safety certifications, the MMRDA official said.

The entire 19.54-kilometre route is expected to be commissioned next year after the completion of the 11.28-kilometre Jacob Circle-Wadala deport stretch, on which civil work is underway. The MMRDA is also set to begin work on a Rs 1.83-crore project for constructing a watchtower and view cutters along the boundary wall of the Arthur Road jail that houses 26/11 attack convict Ajmal Kasab, to protect it from prying eyes once the monorail comes up.

The 6.5-hectare Wadala car depot will provide parking facilities for 21 monorail trains along with other facilities like an operation control centre, a training centre, power station and an administrative facility.
