Leader of opposition in Delhi Assembly VK Malhotra today accused chief minister Sheila Dikshit of "misleading" the people by stating that her government has no role to play as far as deciding the serving of beef during the Commonwealth Games slated in October.

"Dikshit must be aware that Under the Delhi Agricultural Animal Protection Act, slaughtering cows and possession or import of beef is strictly prohibited. The law has to be implemented by the state government and not MCD," Malhotra said in a statement.

His comments were in response to Dikshit's statement that it is the MCD which is supposed to give permission under the municipal laws for serving of beefs in the games village and the government has no role to play.

"According to the Act, it is the responsibility of the state government to enfore and supervise the law. She cannot just pass her responsibility on the MCD and mislead people," the BJP leader added.

Last week there was un uproar in the Delhi Assembly over the issue with BJP members disrupting the proceedings.
