Vizag-based cinema theatre owner, son arrested for polygamy

Vizag-based man and his father, who were on run for the past few days for allegedly cheating three women by marrying all of them, were arrested by Visakhapatnam police.

A special police team arrested VB Rambabu (74), owner of a prominent cinema theatre in Vizag and his son Jagadish Kumar (47) in Chennai yesterday and brought them to Visakhapatnam this morning, a senior police official said.

"The duo were arrested in Chennai and produced before a magistrate in Visakhapatnam today who sent them to judicial remand till March 4," Visakhapatnam Commissioner of Police N Samba Siva Rao told PTI over phone.

In the complaint lodged in II-town police station in Visakhapatnam city, three women have alleged that Jagdish had married all of them and used to harass them along with his father.

Rambabu and Jagadish who were at large were planning to take shelter in Bangalore, police said adding following complaint, the duo were booked for cheating and harassing women while Jagadish was also charged for rape, intimidation and wrongful confinement.

Further investigations are on, police added.  Earlier, AP Mahila Samakhya activists held a sit-in Visakhapatnam demanding action against Jagadish and Rambabu and seizure of their assets and alleged that Jagdish had married seven women.

Meanwhile, home minister P Sabita Reddy too has taken a serious view of the incident and was reviewing the case.
