Vision 2020: Gujarat readies blueprint for mega growth

True to chief minister Narendra Modi's claims that he wants to make Gujarat compete not with other leading state's of India but with world's top developed countries, the blueprints for yet another mega vision has been developed. This time the CM has set a target of putting Gujarat in the league of world's top 50 highest per capita income earning nations by 2020 in a new Big Vision 2020 set by the Gujarat recently.

Highly placed sources in the state government said that the state government has finalised the long-awaited new blueprint for Infrastructure in Gujarat 2020 (Big 2020). The new vision documents projects investment of Rs1,125,591 crore in various sectors like power, gas, SIR Dholera, industrial nodes & SEZs within Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and other than SIR Dholera, industrial parks, roads, ports, railway, logistics parks, airports, urban infrastructure, water supply, IT, tourism among many others.

'The new plan (Big 2020) aims to accelerate Gujarat's development process and envision Gujarat with a per capita income in the league of top 50 countries of the world. The Big 2020 is designed to develop infrastructure that will provide a further fillip to the economic growth of Gujarat and put it on a path to attain the developed world's infrastructure benchmarks.''

New vision document prepared by well-known research and rating agency Crisil described the key strategies for achieving the aforementioned targets by focusing on 11 different areas. These include achieving UMI (upper middle income) countries per capita power generations and consumption benchmarks by building large capacities in power generation besides making gas a preferred fuel across the urban and industrial landscape.

It also aims at accelerating industrialisation by developing world class and globally competitive industrial infrastructure. Developing seamless, efficient and high speed integrated transport networks conforming to global standards are also envisaged.

The vision also aims to put Gujarat in the bracket of major international players in sea freight logistics as well as developing cities that are safe, efficient, clean and green and offer a high quality of life. The vision promises safe, reliable and affordable drinking water across Gujarat, and provide stable water supply for agriculture and aims to make Gujarat a global tourist destination.

The Big 2020 also looks at improved healthcare infrastructure, create widespread network of educational institutions to make Gujarat a globally-recognised knowledge society. It also aims to create a network of post-harvest agriculture infrastructure to ensure better access to markets.
