A day after incidents of police forcefully shut down sheri garba events on Saturday night, the state Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has objected the move claiming the cops have failed to implement norms equally. VHP members on Sunday submitted a memorandum to the city police commissioner asking why the Supreme Court's order on use of loudspeakers applies only to Hindus.

Speaking to DNA, VHP general secretary for city, Raju Patel said that the cops' action on Saturday night to forcefully shut down sheri garba in Satellite area and even beating people at some venues "is inhuman behaviour".

The memorandum to commissioner Sudhir Sinha states, ''In Gujarat, Garba has traditional importance. But during Navratri, city police forcefully shut down events and also snatched away musical instruments at party plots. Also, they threatened to arrest people on whose name the Garba permit has been issued. This has left people disgruntled.''

It further states that police cite the Supreme Court verdict as reason for their act. ''The VHP expresses its feelings by asking why the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment is only meant for Hindus. Every day early in the morning, mosques use speakers for namaaz. The SC has also instructed removal of loudspeakers from mosques but that has not been implemented. So, the VHP demands equal implementation of law. If Garba venues are closed down at 12am, remove speakers from mosques," states the memorandum.

Patel told DNA that if police do act equally when following SC guidelines, the VHP would soon start an agitation.
