Vegetable prices go through the roof due to floods in Punjab & Haryana

According to traders, the prices of most vegetables have risen considerably, with the prices of tomato witnessing a huge jump from Rs20 per kg a week ago to Rs50-Rs 60 at present.

With vast chunks of agricultural land submerged under water due to floods, prices of vegetables across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh have gone through the roof.

The prices of most commonly used vegetables in the region have doubled during the past few days.

According to traders, the prices of most vegetables have risen considerably, with the prices of tomato witnessing a huge jump from Rs20 per kg a week ago to Rs50-Rs 60 at present.

The prices of peas have also risen to Rs70-Rs80 per kg from Rs40-Rs50 per kg earlier.

In addition, the price of potatoes has also surged to Rs15-20 a kg, compared to around Rs10-12 a kg in the past few days.

Other vegetables like lady’s finger, capsicum, beans and cauliflower have also seen a significant jump in prices, traders said.

Thousands of acres of farm land have been submerged by the floods in Punjab and Haryana this week, causing massive crop losses.

Vegetable-laden trucks and carriers have also not been able to bring supplies to the local market from neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, driving up prices.
