Vegetable and fish markets in the busy Kamapalli area here have been evicted, official sources said today.

The vendors would be rehabilitated in the vending zone earmarked by the district administration near Industrial Training Institute (ITI).

Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) had made several attempts earlier to evict the markets but faced protest by the shop-owners.

However, now they agreed to vacate the government land encroached by them after much persuasion and the eviction was carried out yesterday. "They have agreed to shift to the earmarked vending zone", said local MLA R C Chayupattnaik.

Earlier they protested saying the new place was away from the town and lacked infrastructure facilities. But after being assured by the district dministration of facilities like drinking water, electricity and road, they agreed, he said.

Over two acres of land was identified near the ITI by the district administration for the vending zone on which about 400 shop keepers would be accommodated, sub-collector (Berhampur) Ajit Mishra said.

Other vendors, who had developed their makeshift shops in various places on the road in between Kamapalli and Engineering School would also be rehabilitated, he said.

Mishra, however, clarified that the administration would design the shops and vendors would build the structure at their own costs.
