He asked the Centre to give him more security.
“The arrest of Chhota Shakeel’s men exemplifies the kind of terror against which I stand and have been warning against,” said Varun, who faces several legal cases for allegedly making communal speeches in Pilibhit before the Lok Sabha elections.
“This is the second time in recent months that such a conspiracy has been uncovered,” he said. Before the Lok Sabha elections, the Bangalore Police had arrested Rashid Malabari, a close Shakeel aide, who said he had been entrusted with the task of killing Varun for his alleged hate speech in Pilibhit. “I am personally not intimidated by such cowardly threats,” Varun said.
But Varun’s mother, Maneka Gandhi, has in a letter to prime minister Manmohan Singh, alleged that the Union home minister was not taking the “threats” to her son’s life seriously. “It is with the deepest concern for my son’s life and safety that I write to you today,” she said in her letter. “The home ministry has taken these threats very casually — it is like you want Varun Gandhi to be killed,” she said.
“The home minister told me he cannot protect everyone in this country. I find it bizarre that we are never informed of any attempts or even advised on security precautions. We learn of these attempts from the media,” Maneka said. We should be kept informed of such issues so that “we can protect ourselves,” she said.
She even spoke to the Delhi police commissioner but, according to her, he refused to confirm that Varun was the target. The BJP has demanded more security for Varun, who currently enjoys X-category security.
