At a time when politicians are under fire for rampant corruption in public life, a councillor in Valsad has shown that one need not use the public office as a means to get rich. The three-time councillor has set an example by not only living a simple life but also continuing with her work as a vegetable seller.

Nayna Patel, a resident of Sughad falia in Valsad is a councillor from ward no.2. The three-time councillor could have used her position to amass wealth. But despite being elected thrice, Patel has continued to live in her two room house which she shares with her husband and four children.

Apart from being a councillor, Nayna sells vegetables to earn her living. She is not ashamed of her work and believes that every job has its dignity. “I was never ashamed of selling vegetables. I used to do that even when I was not a councillor. I sell vegetables to support my family and provide some financial help to my husband Dharmesh,” Nayna said.

Interestingly, Dharmesh and Nayna’s four daughters also support her. The family has never made any undue demands on Nayna or forced her to curry favours for them.

Nayna’s four daughters accompany her to help her sell vegetables. “Nayna is someone who believes in self-respect and truth. She has never misused her position nor has she allowed anybody in her circle to do so. Even when she was chairman of drainage committee, Nayna stayed away from using the vehicle allotted to her by Valsad municipality,” Dharmesh, a casual labour by profession, said.

Her image as non-corrupt is such that voters of ward no.2 seldom vote for other candidates. In her first term, she fought on a BJP ticket, then on a Congress ticket and then as an independent candidate. She apparently left political parties due to her insistence on remaining non-corrupt.

"We will always support Nayna in municipal elections because we know that she is non-corrupt. I have never heard of Nayna being involved in any scam or fraudulent practices in all these years," Gunvant Patel, a voter of ward no.2, said.
