MDMK general secretary Vaiko began a one-day hunger strike in Nagapattinam on Sunday condemning the "indiscriminate attack" on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.
CPI state secretary D Pandian inaugurated the strike. A large number of MDMK cadres are also taking part.
A press release said MDMK has organised the strike to condemn the Tamil Nadu and Union governments for not taking effective steps to prevent the attacks on the fishermen.
Two Indian fishermen were allegedly killed within 10 days by the Lankan navy last month, which led to widespread condemnation and saw foreign secretary Nirupama Rao meet Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Jan 31 over the issue.
