Ahmedabad’s very own Kankaria Lakefront’s popularity is on the rise especially during vacation time. It attracted 1.95 lakh more visitors than usual during the vacation period.
Throughout these three months of the vacation, from April to June, a total of 13.47 lakh people visited the lakefront as compared to 11.88 lakh in the corresponding period of the previous year, which shows a growth of 13%.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation earned Rs1.74 crore from the entry fees at Kankaria Lakefront in three months compared to Rs1.45 crore collected during the same period last year showcasing a growth of 20%.
Toy trains, Kids City, and helium balloon apart from the zoo, bal vatika, Nagina Wadi and amusement park are its major attractions. The toy trains have continued to beat every other attraction.
The number of passengers waiting to hop onto the Atal Express and Swarnim Express soared during the vacation period as compared to last year. In December 2010, AMC added one more train considering the popularity of toy trains.
Moreover, Kids City has also received good response with 28,000 visitors during three months with an average 394 daily visitors during April, May and the first ten days of June 2011.
The figures, showing fees and number of visitors, this year differed from that of the previous year. This time it took only two months and ten days, whereas, in 2010, a complete three-month’s time was taken to attain the respective figures, said an AMC official.
Now the civic body wants to increase the attraction quotient of the front. It wants to add a new food court along with new rides at the amusement park.
"The contract of the amusement park has already expired and the contractor has been given an extension. We have floated tenders to invite a new contractor," said MS Patel, deputy municipal commissioner south zone.
Patel said AMC wants the latest rides to be installed at the park to draw more crowds. With this aim, the civic body considers attaining a level similar to that of global players.
