After failing to meet target in the last crushing season, Uttar Pradesh has so far produced over 47 lakh metric tonne sugar, almost 20% more than the estimated production in the current season, a senior official sources said here today.

"As compared to 40.64 lakh metric tonne sugar produced in the last season, the state has already produced 47.2 lakh metric tonne by crushing 522.55 lakh metric tonne cane till March 21," cane commissioner Sudhir M Bobade said.

At the start of the ongoing crushing season, UP projected only 39.6 lakh metric tonne sugar production, which was lesser than 40.64 lakh metric tonne produced in the last crushing season. Of 128 sugar mills in the state, 46 units are still crushing cane, Bobade said,

On payment to farmers, he said against the cane price of Rs11,022.47 crore, payment of Rs10,702.98 crore has been made to the farmers. "Efforts are being made for early payment of remaining Rs319.49 crore," he added.

With farmers getting prices much higher than the state advisory price announced by the government this year, cane area is likely to increase by 15-18 per cent in the state.

"Last year cane area was 17.88 lakh hectare, which is estimated to increase up to 20 lakh hectare," he said.
