Uttar Pradesh's debt burden to touch Rs2 lakh crore in 2010-11

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh's debt burden is likely to touch the Rs two lakh-crore mark in 2010-11 fiscal.

According to the estimates of the state budget for 2010-2011 tabled in the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha today, the debt burden of the state is likely to go up to over Rs1,98,013 crores, registering a rise of Rs17,012 crores compared to the figures of the current fiscal.

In the face of rising debt burden, the government has derived satisfaction in the fact that the debts would be less than last year's estimates of 40% of the GDP at only 38% this year.

According to the figures available in the Budget literature, the total debt burden of the state before 2007-2008 was above 44 per cent of the state's GDP.

Of the total receipts of over 1.44 lakh crores for next fiscal about 24.8% came as the state share of the central taxes and 29.5% from the state taxes .

Public debts contribute 15.3% to the state kitty and 13.1% comes as central aid .

Out of the estimated 1.53 lakh crore expenditure during the next fiscal, a whopping over 37% would go in salaries and pensions whereas over 15% would go in repayment of debt and interests.
