Uttar Pradesh panchayat polls: 1 killed, 6 fall ill after having liquor

One person was killed and six others taken seriously ill allegedly after consuming liquor at a feast organised by a candidate for the panchayat elections in the state, the first phase of which began today.

The victims had attended the feast organised by a candidate in Patwadh zilla panchayat in Chopan police station area last night in which liquor and chicken were served, police said.

Superintendent of police Pritender Singh said that the death was result of over consumption of liquor while ruling out that it was spurious.

Those taken ill have been discharged from hospital this morning, Singh said, adding that the candidate and organisers of the feast were absconding.
