Uttar Pradesh govt not worried for flood victims: BJP

The BJP state unit today accused chief minister Mayawati of not taking adequate steps to provide succour to the flood victims and said that its leaders were being prevented from visiting affected areas.

"Chief minister Mayawati is conducting only aerial surveys but no representative of state government is visiting the flood victims. Our party had cautioned the government earlier about the floods but they did not take any action to help the affected people," Uttar Pradesh BJP President Surya Pratap Shahi said.

The government had spent Rs 0,000 crore for constructing statues and parks, but has no money for flood relief. The state government has also demanded Rs 2,000 crore from the centre as an aid for the flood victims of western UP, Shahi said.

BJP District President Vimal Sharma alleged that the ruling BSP did not want other party leaders to visit flood affected areas as it will expose the state government's failure to help the flood victims.

However, BSP MLA Yogesh Verma claimed, "BJP leaders went to flood areas to play panchayat poll politics and are inciting people against the BSP and the state government," adding that "BSP will oppose any such move".

Commenting on Ayodhya verdict, Shahi said, "The SC verdict must be respected by all. Millions of people have sentiments attached to the Ayodhya temple."

Shahi blamed the state government for spreading unnecessary tension in the state over Ayodhya verdict.
