Bihar Assembly today witnessed an uproarious scene with the CPI-ML MLAs, supported by others from the opposition bench, storming the well of the house in protest against the police branding the party's senior MLA, Ramnaresh Ram, a naxalite in a murder case in Bhojpur district.

As soon as the house assembled for the day, CPI-ML (Liberation) MLAs, waving placards and shouting anti-government slogans, trooped to the well, voicing concern over the police action branding Ram a naxalite.

The state government should immediately intervene and withdraw the FIR against Ram, party leader Arun Kumar said, adding it was 'extremely unfortunate' that the police wanted to defame an octogenarian leader like Ram.

"It is an insult to Ram and a registered political party," Kumar said, adding the FIR in the case related to killing of a villager was registered by the Chauri police in Bhojpur district way back in 2000.

"It is matter of utter surprise that Ram has been falsely implicated in the case after eight years of the incident which reflected an afterthought," Kumar said.

The CPI-ML MLAs were supported by their colleagues from RJD, Congress, LJP, CPI and CPI-M, who too denounced the police action.

The din continued even as Parliamentary affairs minister Ramashray Prasad Singh told the house that chief minister Nitish Kumar was personally looking into the matter.

As the determined opposition stuck to their demands, deputy chief minister SK Modi, in absence of the CM who is in New Delhi, intervened and said the police had already approached the court in Bhojpur seeking deletion of the word 'naxalite' mentioned in their petition while seeking issuance of warrants of arrest against accused persons in the case, including the CPI-ML MLA.

Modi, however, remained non-committal on the demand for 'unconditional' withdrawal of the case against Ram saying "It is now for the judiciary to decide about it".

After Modi assured the members that the government would make a statement on the issue in the house tomorrow, the agitated MLAs returned to their seats.

The chief minister had on June 28 assured the members of taking action after CPI-ML MLAs had created similar noisy scenes in the house during the question hour.
