CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat today accused the UPA of serving the interests of capitalists, saying it had resulted in wealth being limited to the privileged few.

"Economic development is being done by keeping in mind the interests of capitalists. In its second stint UPA government is working in this direction with wealth getting confined to just a few people," Karat alleged during a meeting of party workers here.

Referring to a political resolution passed by the party's central committee in August this year, the CPI(M) general secretary said agriculture and food security are major issues "with people dying of hunger and malnutrition despite 6,000 crore tonnes of foodgrain stocked in FCI godowns."

On alleged atrocities by Maoists, Karat alleged that these activities were being carried out under protection from feudal forces and Left workers were being targeted.

Since Lok Sabha elections as many as 300 CPI(M) workers had been killed in West Bengal alone, he said.

The CPI(M) leader said that the party would corner Maoists with the help of the people.

Discussing on Kashmir issue he said that confidence building measures should be taken under political process.
