Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a search for six-decade-old documents relating to the ownership title of the disputed land in Ayodhya following a High Court order.

There were seven documents on which the Allahabad High Court has sought a report from the government, special secretary, home, RP Mishra said on Saturday.

"A circular had been issued by the Uttar Pradesh government directing departments concerned to search the original documents related the disputed property in Ayodhya. Some documents have been found," he said.

The documents date back to 1949 when the dispute arose for the first time over ownership of the property in Ayodhya.

"These documents contain correspondence between the district administration of Faizabad and the government and are very old," Mishra said.

"Though photocopies of these documents are available in the files, the court had sought the original documents," he said.

The court had fixed July 7 as the next date of hearing and directed the state chief secretary and principal secretary, Home, to appear in person.
