For the record, the Bharatiya Janata Party may have suspended the membership of tainted former BSP minister Babu Singh Kushwaha. But that has not stopped the party from deriving political mileage in the name of this backward leader. On Thursday, Kushwaha sounded a “vote BJP” appeal at a rally in Farrukhabad in western UP.

Though the saffron party had not formally organised the “Pichhda Arakshan Bachao” (save backwards’ reservation) rally, sources confirmed that all arrangements for the rally from the transport to the attendant crowds were managed by the local BJP candidates. Besides, it is no secret that Kushwaha does not have the stature to command a rally on his own.

“The BSP is a casteist party. I am here to expose the party and unveil all the corruption that is going on in UP under the BSP regime,” said Kushwaha, who was till recently Mayawati’s trusted man and had been associated with the BSP for 27 years. He was expelled from the BSP after he became an accused in the multi-crore NRHM scam of UP.

“I will not take any names just now as an inquiry is going on (into the NRHM scam by the CBI),” the former minister said.
“For 27 years, I have served the BSP with complete honesty and commitment and this is what I get in return,” he lamented, adding that false cases had been fabricated against him, his relatives and associates.

“Not even in my dreams had I ever imagined that the BSP would treat me this way,” he said.

Speaking on the OBC quota, he said: “In principle, I am not against reservation being given to backward Muslims but the interests of the backwards should not be affected.”

He said he would tour the entire state and spread awareness on the issue among the OBCs regardless of party affiliation. He said he would also campaign for other BSP MLAs who had been expelled from the party just before the election.

Kushwaha asserted that he was not working for any particular party, but at the same time appealed to the people to vote for the BJP as it was the only party championing the cause of OBCs vis-a-vis quotas.
