Stepping up their attack on chief minister VS Achuthanandan and his son VA Arun Kumar, Congress-led UDF today demanded an enquiry into the foreign trips undertaken by Kumar in his capacity as director of Institute of Human Resources Development.

Congress MLA VD Satheesan today alleged that most foreign trips undertaken by Kumar were without permission from the authorities.

He dared the LDF government to disclose details of the trips and order a probe. The government should disclose how many times Arun Kumar had travelled abroad and details of the persons he met in his official capacity, he said.

Satheesan also recalled certain serious allegations raised in the past by technocrat KPP Nambiar about Kumar's intervention in the aborted Kannur Power Project.

Earlier in the day, the issue also rocked the state Assembly on its final day, with the opposition raising the issue and boycotting proceedings.

Responding to the charges, Achuthanandan said they were "baseless" and betrayed the opposition's apprehensions over past "misdeeds' catching up.

Arun Kumar had sent lawyer's notices to Congress leader MM Hassan and Jaihind TV channel, alleging that baseless charges were levelled against him with the intention of defaming his father.
