Sleuths of the crime branch have nabbed two people in connection with the murder of a 42-year-old woman in Vastrapur.

The woman, Balwanti Patel, was found murdered in her bedroom and initially it was suspected that it was a case of blackmail. But now it has emerged that she was murdered allegedly by the two men who had tried to rob her.

Police nabbed the duo Ashwin Patel (32), a resident of Krishnanagar and Mahendra Chaudhary (25), a native of Mehsana in this connection. The duo had hatched a conspiracy to rob Patel but murdered her when she resisted their attempts.

According to crime branch officials, Ashwin knew Balwanti since a long time. Officials said that Ashwin had met Mahendra in September this year through a friend Medhraj Patel who worked as a driver in Ahmedabad.

Some few months back Ashwin used to run a franchise of Liverpool Showroom on CG road but was left unemployed after the showroom ran into a loss. Mahendra is a farmer. Both the accused were in dire need of money. Officials said that on the morning of November 27, the duo met in front of the Civil Hospital where Ashwin told Mahendra that he knew Balwanti since a long time.

He also told Mahendra that Balwanti lived alone because of which she will not protest if they robbed her of Rs 50,000. Patel then called up Balwanti and told her that they were going to visit her at her house. Both the accused, armed with knives, reached the house of Balwanti.  Officials said that following this, Chaudhary also allegedly had physical relations with Balwanti.

Chaudhary then called Patel inside the house after which the duo allegedly threatened her with dire consequences if she did not hand over whatever she had. Balwanti, however, resisted their attempts to rob her following which the duo attacked her with knives.

The duo then took two mobile phones of Balwanti and fled the spot. The duo was nabbed on the basis of a tip-off received by police inspector KK Patel of crime branch when they met at the Prakash Hindi High School in Krishnanagar to sell the stolen mobile phones.
