After years of exasperating negotiations, the government and TV channels have finally agreed on a self-regulator for the broadcast media, information and broadcasting (I&B) minister Ambika Soni said on Friday.

The joint taskforce in-charge of thrashing out a mechanism has finalised its recommendations and Soni said she discussed the proposals with home minister P Chidambaram and law minister Veerappa Moily on Thursday.

“The 13-member body will have four broadcasting sector representatives, four eminent people from civil society and chairpersons or nominees of statutory commissions for women, children, scheduled castes or minorities,” she said.
