Tribal woman in Assam alleges assault by army

Mahi Murmu(50) claimed before the police and journalists that army men came to her house last night and dug up the floor of her mud hut looking for money that the ULFA had allegedly hidden in her house.

A tribal woman in upper Assam's Dibrugarh district today alleged that the army had physically assaulted her while searching for money hidden by ULFA in her house but the troops denied her charge.

She also informed the police that an AK-47 rifle was left behind by the army men in her house.

The police recovered the assault rifle, which was, however, taken away by an army officer from the police station claiming it was left behind during the operation in Murmu's house.

Defence sources said the search operation was conducted in Murmu's house following a tip off that arms and ammunition were hidden there but nothing was found.
