It is time for the trees in the city to be counted. And we mean it literally. At present if you were to ask any civic body officials about the total number of trees in the city, you  will probably draw a blank. But now, to get an idea about the success ratio of tree plantation, the civic body has decided to start a tree census within the city limits in the coming months.

The move comes after a vigilance inquiry in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) parks and garden department brought to fore many malpractices related to tree plantation. It should be noted that six officials of the parks and gardens department were suspended following the inquiry about the malpractices. If everything goes as per plan, the first tree census by the civic body might kick off by Diwali.

The recent addition of officials to the parks and garden department will also help matters. Deputy municipal commissioner for parks and garden department, SK Langa said that they intend to study the number and type of trees planted by the civic body.

"We have chalked out plans to count trees in two ways. First, the trees planted on main roads will be counted. Next, we will concentrate on trees at traffic islands, public spaces, parks and gardens," Langa said.He said this will give the civic body an idea about the exact number and type of trees.  "The data will help us get an estimate about the total number of trees planted by the civic body and those that survived," said Langa. He said the estimate can be used to bring about changes in the way trees are cared for after plantation.

He also said that with dozens of assistant engineers and other officials being put on deputation in the parks and garden department, quality of work is also set to improve.

Langa said the new panel with Pathik Shah as director of the department has already started working on conducting the first tree plantation at Kankaria Lake.
