The joint action committee (JAC) formed by Congress, TRS and other Telangana outfits has set a Monday deadline for the Centre to clarify Union home minister P Chidambaram’s statement that more consultations and a consensus were need on granting statehood to the region.

Sources in JAC, which met in Hyderabad on Friday, said an indefinite shutdown would be observed in Telangana if the Centre failed to respond to its call.

“We want to give some time to the Centre. We don’t want to disturb Christmas and Muharram celebrations till Monday. A formal decision on an indefinite shutdown will be taken on Monday night,” a JAC senior member said.JAC was formed on Thursday by parties with presence in Andhra to fight for Telangana. The Congress and the TRS are its leading members, while the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP is yet to take a decision on joining, primarily because it does not want to share the dais with the TRS.

The JAC meeting on Friday was attended by almost all Telangana leaders. MP Madhu Yashki Goud also participated. “There is some confusion on the process of forming a Telangana state, particularly after the second announcement by Chidambaram. People re not convinced by the clarification issued by leaders close to the high command. We are keen on the Centre setting a timeframe for the process,” R Damodar Reddy, a senior Congress MLA from Telangana, said.

JAC also decided to go to villages to strengthen the movement. Starting Saturday, it is planning to coordinate with district committees on continuing the protest.

12 ministers quit

Meanwhile, 12 Telangana ministers in the Andhra cabinet faxed their resignations to Sonia Gandhi. They were planning to go to Delhi to meet the Congress chief and explain to her the state of affairs and the reasons for their mass resignations.

University campuses in Telangana remained tense. With additional paramilitary landing in Hyderabad, student committees were reworking strategies to sustain momentum. JAC of Osmania University was planning to ban Andhra products.
