Jammu & Kashmir government has ‘forced-retired’ a highly decorated IPS officer, who was at the forefront to quell summer unrest, for allegedly tampering with his date of birth and overstaying in the department for two years.

Farooq Ahmad, inspector general of police (security), had allegedly fudged his date of birth from February 5, 1949 to November 25, 1951 to avail the service benefits for more than two years.

“The government order is clear and he (Farooq) is deemed to have been retired on February 5, 2009. The treatment of the period, the officer has overstayed in service shall be decided separately”, said BR Sharma, Principal Secretary of Home department, Jammu and Kashmir Additional director general of police (Civil Defence) Gopal Reddy has been given the charge of IGP Security earlier held by Farooq, police sources said.

Farooq was regarded one of the finest officers of the police who have handled sensitive assignments during his career. He was the IGP Kashmir during summer unrest before he was replaced by SM Sahai.

Farooq was the head of the special investigation team (SIT) probing the Shopian rape and murder case before he was appointed the new inspector general of police, Kashmir zone, in a last ditch effort by Omar Abdullah to restore confidence and peace in the restive valley.

Ahmad held the reputation of being a tough officer and that was why he was appointed the head of SIT two years ago to probe the fake encounter killings in 2006. Several police officers including the then SSP Ganderbal HR Parihar were arrested and they continue to languish in jail pending trail in the case. This time too high court reposed faith in Ahmad and made him the SIT head to probe Shopian rape and murder case.

Farooq was not available for comments and sources said he may move court.
