The Congress finds Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh’s offer to accept or give support to it in a post-poll scenario in Uttar Pradesh premature.

“Right now we are in the middle of an election. We do not know why he has made this statement. Perhaps, it is a sign of his realisation that his party would not get a majority on its own,” Congress spokesperson Renuka Chaudhary said.

The party feels that mid-campaign is not a stage for any talk of post-poll alliances. “Everything depends on the numbers, so why get into that debate now?” she added.’

“This is Mulayam’s message to the minority voters that in the ultimate analysis when it would boil down to the crucial question of forming the government, the Congress and the SP are one,” a senior Congress functionary said. He said that by remaining indifferent to this offer, the Congress is also conveying a clear message to the same target community that there is distinction difference between the two parties.
