If you are one of those who usually catch up on their sleep while travelling long distance in an Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service bus here is a rude awakening. The AMTS is planning to cut short its long routes with effect from the new financial year.

At present, the transport body of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has adopted the policy of longer routes so as to cover more people and areas under its service.  Certain routes like the one from Manipur village to Vinoba Bhave Nagar or Lambha to Tragad are as long as forty to fifty kilometres.  But now the transport body feels that the longer routes are ineffective as far as time management of buses are concerned.

"Even if one bus on the route gets caught in a traffic jam, the whole schedule for the day goes for a toss," said Praveen Patel, chairman of AMTS.  He said that time management is the key to successfully manage any public transport system, particularly in urban areas.

The longer routes will now be divided in two parts. For example, the Manipur village to Vinoba Bhave Nagar route will now be divided in two parts - Manipur village to Lal Darwaja and Lal Darwaja to Vinoba Bhave Nagar. Patel said the new move will not have any adverse impact on the commuters."People can take a bus to the main terminuses in the city and from there they can get a bus to the destination of their choice," he said.

He also said that the new system will ensure that private players do not bunk a given route citing traffic problem or bus failure.  "At present, the operators cancel a trip in case of breakdown. This won't happen in case of shorter routes," Patel said.

Apart from this, the AMTS plans to place electronic display boards at all terminuses in the city. This will help the commuters get proper information about the bus timings.
