Three killed, 50 injured in Assam thunderstorm

At least three persons were killed and over 50 injured when a severe thunderstorm lashed many parts of Assam last night.
   
Heavy rain and thunderstorm uprooted trees and electric posts as traffic on most of the national highways came to a standstill for more than two hours from 8 pm.
   
According to official sources, three persons in Sonitpur, Darrang and Goalpara died when they were hit by lightning during the storm.
   
More than 50 people were injured in various parts of the state during the thunderstorm that continued for over two hours.
   
Main thoroughfares of the main city were flooded due to heavy rain and trees were uprooted in several places.
   
The city went without electricity today as the poles were flattened by the storm.
       
Officials said the worst affected districts were Kamrup (metro), Kamrup (rural), Dhubri, Goalpara, Nalbari and Barpeta.
