Festive mood gripped the capital today as people celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr, thronging mosques for morning 'namaz', offering alms to the poor and needy and visiting friends and relatives.

Dressed in their best, people greeted each others "Eid Mubarak" soon after the prayers were over.

Thousands of Muslims gathered at the prominent Jama Masjid and Fatehpuri Masjid in the walled city and listened to sermons of Shahi Imams Syed Ahmed Bukhari and Mufti Muhammed Mukkaram.

They also exchanged gifts and enjoyed special dishes, particularly 'sewayian' (vermicelli), and different varieties of 'biriyani'.

Addressing the congregation, Maulana Mukkaram asked the UPA government to implement Sachar Committee's report.

He also expressed the hope that steps will be taken to maintain law and order after the high court judgement on Ayodhya title suits to be pronounced later this month.

"Anti-social and communal activities must be checked," he said.

The Eid is celebrated after a month-long fasting of Ramazan by members of the Muslim community who congregate at important mosques in the city and hold prayers for peace, progress and prosperity.
