Gujarat’s first confirmed case of swine flu is a sailor who had come to Kandla to board a ship. The 30-year-old patient, Som Jai, is a Thai national who is now being treated for the viral disease in a special isolation ward at Kandla Port Trust (KPT) hospital in Gopalpuri, Gandhidham.

The port health officer, Dr Senthil Nathan of the Union health ministry, told DNA on Sunday that the Thai sailor was detected with swine flu symptoms on June 30. “He was found to have swine flu symptoms during a routine medical check-up of the crew of the vessels arriving at the port,” he said. “Such a check-up is mandatory under law.”
Jai was admitted to the KPT hospital on June 30 itself and has been kept in the hospital’s special isolation ward since then.

“After admitting him to the hospital, we sent a sample of his throat swab to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), New Delhi, for a confirmatory test,” said Dr Nathan. “We gave him preventive medicines initially but started treatment for swine flu after the NICD confirmed that he was suffering from the viral disease.”

The port health officer said the Thai sailor would be treated for swine flu for five days after which his medical condition would be examined by a team of doctors. “A decision on discharging him from hospital would be taken only after the doctors’ team declares him free of the disease,” said Dr Nathan.

Chief medical officer of the KPT hospital, Dr CM Joshi, said Jai is recovering fast and should be fit to be discharged soon. Jai had come to Mumbai from Bangkok and then, on June 29, he, along with two fellow crew members, took a flight to reach Kandla where they had to board a ship. The other two crew members are both Filipinos.
