Terrorists can target India's nuclear plants, says M Ramachandran

Minister of state for home expressed in the Lok Sabha that in view of the prevailing security scenario, the atomic power plants continue to remain targets of terrorist groups

M.Ramachandran, minister of state for home on Tuesday told members of the Lok Sabha that India’s nuclear power plants could be targeted by terrorists.

“In view of the prevailing security scenario, the atomic power plants continue to remain targets of terrorist groups,” Ramachandran said, but added that the government has taken all security steps to prevent such an event.

Speaking during Question Hour, Ramachandran said “regular sensitisation programmes” are being carried out by officials at these plants.

He said intelligence inputs were shared “at the appropriate level of Department of Atomic Energy and the state governments concerned from time to time” to maintain constant tight security vigil at such vital installations.

Ramachandran also maintained that the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and other departmental security personnel have been deployed to provide security to these installations.

Nuclear power is the fourth-largest source of electricity in India after thermal, hydro and renewable sources of electricity.

India has 20 nuclear reactors in operation in six power plants, generating 4,780 megawatts of power. Five other plants are under construction and are expected to generate an additional 2,720 megawatts of power.

The country’s nuclear power industry plans to increase nuclear power output to 64,000 megawatts by 2032.
