A runaway male buffalo sparked tension between two communities on the day of Bakri Eid. At 11am on Monday, a buffalo caused panic on the roads near Lal Darwaza and Ellisbridge, while trying to escape from being slaughtered.

When the buffalo reached the Sunday market area under the Ellisbridge, more than 50 butchers, who had been trying to capture him, also reached the spot. When they tried to capture the animal near the river bed, local slum dwellers protested, and asked them to leave the buffalo alone. According to a local resident, the mob was equipped with sharp weapons and told the locals to keep off the matter. "They told us that the buffalo is worth Rs 35,000, and it has to be slaughtered as today is Bakri Eid. But we took a united stand and quickly called the police," said a local resident living in a slum near the Sunday market.

Fearing that the situation could spiral out of control, police officials of Gaekwad Haveli quickly informed the crime branch. After receiving the call, police rushed to the spot in 4 vehicles, along with crime branch officials. They asked the Muslims to leave the buffalo alone and go back to their homes. At 1:30 pm, the matter was finally resolved, as both the communities dispersed from the spot. Police took the custody of the frightened buffalo and sent it to an animal shelter. According to SN Parmar, police inspector of Gaekwad Haveli, the buffalo escaped from a tempo near Ellisbridge and hit some road side carts near Victoria Garden before entering the Sunday market ground on the Sabarmati riverfront.

However, locals claimed that the buffalo was kept inside a house in Dariapur and got frightened when two goats were slaughtered in front of him. The buffalo broke the rope which bound him and ran towards Lal Darwaza and then came to Victoria Garden. "He was followed by a mob carrying sharp weapons used for slaughtering, which scared him," said a local.
