Ten Maoists surrender before police in Visakhapatnam

The surrendered Maoists said that they had faced several problems after becoming a part of the Maoist organisation.

Ten members of of the Communist Party of India (Maoists), including two Korukonda group members, surrendered before the district superintendent of police (SP) today.

Addressing a press conference, the SP (Rural) G Srinivas said he said the ten members had surrendered as they decided to join the mainstream.

The surrendered Maoists, who were present before media, said that they had faced several problems after becoming a part of the Maoist organisation. They also said that they quit it due to health problems and with an intention to lead a peaceful life further.

Srinivas said that the two Korukonda group members B Kumari alias Mangeli and P Sobhan were involved in various offences including exchange of fire with police both in Orissa and in agency area of Visakhapatnam district.

He also claimed that the militant activities had come down in agency areas in the district.

Rs20,000 each would be given to two Korukonda members and Rs 5,000 each to armed and militia members as part of rehabilitation package and other benefits provided by the government to the surrendered Maoist members, he said.
